35 E. Gay St. also called The Historic Commerce Building was home to the Columbia Building & Loans starting in 1926. The tellers were positioned on the west wall and the vault (which still exists today) was used as the safe. Ohio Bell took over the entire five story building around 1940. During this time, a 10 foot drop ceiling was added to the bank lobby on the first floor hiding the chandelier and magnificent arching windows for almost 60 years. When the last tenant of the first floor space left in 2002, the ceiling was removed only to uncover a 100-year-old chandelier. The tile floor was removed to expose 100-year-old marble flooring. Above the vault you will find original marble and the archway at the entrance of the building is 100-year-old granite.
